  12. Here's a snippet of a short story...

Ben walked over to the hotel bed, sat on the end of it and put his head in his hands without saying a word. I hesitated with my toe still in the door. My instinct was to run, but my obligation was to Ben. I walked over towards the bed with gentleness to my step. I crawled up behind him and put my knees on either side of his body and wrapped my arms around his waist. I rested my cheek against his back and just stayed there listening to his deep breathing. It always made me sleepy, having my head on his chest or back and being able to hear him breathe. It was just like the hum of the car or the blade of a fan; rotating round and round hypnotizing my body into the place of my dreams. If someone took a picture I’m sure it’d win a Pulitzer Prize. It was one of those painfully realistic portrayals of human emotion and vulnerability. They’d have to have one of those expensive cameras, with the big lens and the multiple settings, but I knew it could win. Sometimes I was creative like that in catching certain moments at the right time and finding a way to express them, but all my creativity had dried up when I started running. Even though I was trying to squeeze all of our spoiled experiences out of Ben his warm body was melting away my exterior. I felt the exposure as if I was in one of those glass bathrooms in the city that you could see everyone out of, but this time everyone could see me. I didn’t want to cry again, there were always so many wasted sobs, but I couldn’t help it. I was such a Fuck up.

And here's a short word play poem

    Leave my poison-toed Montana
On the back porch with muddy boots,
Sweet singing moody blues near the stale chimney.
Her ghastly howls like a lion-gigged rhythm, kicked her cackling outside
To the back porch with muddy boots,
While the swine, wine and dine, listening to sweeter symphonies.
    Montana’s rhythm shattered the glasses
And shook the floor, flinging flakes of potato skins
Among the hungry dogs panting and the dinner guests ranting.
    Her musical melodies mimicked mischief
Leaving babies weeping and dinner guests seething.
Montana’s ghastly howls and bass growls,
Forced her to the porch, spitting and singing.
She smokes a cigarette, humming the raspy pain
Of moody blues sung at the dinner table in vain.

    JOUR 202: Introduction to Journalism

Have you ever wondered what it must be like to go to the beach early in the morning and without hesitation, completely submerge your entire body into the ocean on a cold December morning? Over the past few years, hundreds of citizens gather at the shoreline in sweatpants and sweatshirts waiting for the signal, and as soon as the whistle goes off, the bathing suits and ridiculous costumes are exposed and the crowd anxiously sprints full on into the unbearable ocean water at Coopers Beach in Southampton Village on a Saturday morning in December. But this event does not only take place just in Long Island. This popular winter event is known across the world as the infamous “Polar Bear Plunge.” The plunge, an unforgettable, fun yearly experience is to help benefit Human Resources, such as helping local families in need and donating to charity. Each individual that chooses to participate in this positive, exciting event must beforehand find other individuals to sponsor him or her. All of the money in which they earn goes straight to charity. Other ways in which this organization holds ways to collect money is by having a logo contest in high school all around, leading up to the Plunge each year.
“I’m a beach person,” Scott Collins said, “but I’ve been doing this event for about six years and it’s a great way to get your adrenaline running through your body and get out there with some friends or a group of good people and do something exciting for a great, great cause.”
    -more-
There are many different methods each participant uses to stay warm, such as rubbing their bodies down with Vaseline, jumping in their heated cars right after, or simply toughing it out and joining with the crowd for a group brunch after the event. Last year, the organization collected $14,000, and hopefully, the donations will get higher and higher each year this grand event is held.

Not many bands can incorporate multiple genres in their music, but Bounce Method has certainly perfected the art of it. The blend of four different musical backgrounds has produced the band that is making a big splash in and out of New Paltz.
Bounce Method is comprised of four SUNY New Paltz students, Third- year media management major Luke DiCola (lead singer), Fourth –year, Contemporary Music major with an minor in business, Guy Piaquadio (bass), third-year, jazz performance, theory & composition major, with a minor in physics, concentration in astronomy, Matthew Hunter (guitar), and third-year pre-finance major, Jason Greenspan (drums). The band members explained that they each add a unique flavor of music to their band, and that’s what sets them apart from many bands. While merging their different styles works in their favor, they also expressed a difficulty in finding a middle ground between them all. “There’s a hard line to cross between friends and band mates, ” says DiCola. Greenspan joked “me and Guy are never friends when we’re playing.” However, their fans are appreciative of the many influences of funk, reggae, hip-hop, alternative, and classic rock that are present in their music.
The four band-mates started playing together two years ago. “Jason and myself were in the same jazz band, and he and I jammed and even played a party or two together. I knew Luke from male call and Jason knew Guy from the gym, and we came together around april of 2010” says Hunter. Their name, Bounce Method, originated from a phrase Greenspans former roommate, Matthew Dagostino used frequently, “Whenever he would leave the room he'd say, ‘Ok guys I'm out, bounce method.’ Bounce method was sort of a descriptive statement for what was going on,” said Greenspan. According to DiCola, “we started bouncing around in college hall, and it just worked.” Having flourished in this very college town, Bounce Method started their journey by performing at local parties, and have since had shows at many reputable venues outside of New Paltz. On October 1st they played at the Psychedelic Zombie Barbeque in Newburgh. One of their favorite shows was at the Nikon Theatre at Jones Beach, when they opened for Journey and Foreigner. Locally they have played at Oasis, Mahoney’s, and Grimaldi’s.

Bounce Method also works closely with former
student, and up and coming artist, Saw Lachow. DiCola played on Lachow’s recently released album “Brand New Bike.” With much collaboration together, Bounce Method and Sam Lachow will be performing together at Grimaldi’s on November 15th.
Aside from a series of live performances, Bounce Method is also hoping to release a CD in the next coming months. Bass player, Piaquadio states “our main objective is to build up a fan base through shows with covers mixed with our original songs.” Like the uniqueness of their music, they cover a wide array of artist in their performences, according to Greenspan, “We've covered Sublime, Incubus, Blink 182, Sum 41, Destiny’s Child, Taking Back Sunday, Weezer, Bon Jovi, Beastie Boys, and Sugar Ray. We like to stick with mostly 90's pop/hip hop/rock, but we try to include a few throwbacks.” With seven songs well in the making, the band members are looking forward to release of their album called “Characters.” When prompted with the reason behind the album name, Hunter explained, “Our songs are about how your subconscious can influence your conscious- your character.”
Despite the demands of a school and work obligations, Bounce Method is practicing and recording three to four times a week, and are highly committed to making their band a success. Greenspan remarked “the band takes precedence over everything else.”
Piaquadio will be graduating a semester before the rest of the band, but lives a short 20 minutes from New Paltz, so guys aren’t too worried about keeping their band intact in the next coming year. “If things start to take off, we hope that Guy will hang around and see where it takes the 4 of us. I think he'll be down for that.” Says Greenspan.
While the future of Bounce Method is moderately dependent on the success of their first CD, much enthusiasm was expressed about keeping the Bounce Method movement going even after their stay in New Paltz.

Your on your back, you make a 180 degree flip and now your on your stomach. You turn to your right side, then your left and now your body is all jumbled in blankets. You open your eyes and close them but before you know it, a loud beeping is waking you up.

Problems sleeping at night and sleep deprivation are an issue college students face, affecting their school performance and their health.

Sleeping does not come naturally for New Paltz sophomore Alyssa Kennedy who struggles to fall asleep every night. Kennedy says that she spends three to four hours lying in bed at night staring at the ceiling because she can’t fall asleep.

“I get sick a lot and there are days where I feel like I can’t function, but my body has gotten used to it,” Kennedy said. “I know this is a result of my lack of sleep because on the rare occasion I fall asleep when I want to, I have so much more energy and am in such a better mood the next day.”

For Kennedy health issues are the main consequences she faces because of her sleeping problems. Kennedy says that she gets a shot every month and often gets migraines, which she believes is a result of no sleep. She takes vitamin B12 pills for more energy to make up for lack of sleep.

Kennedy has been able to maintain a 4.0 grade point average last semester. The pressure she faces to maintain such a high grade point average, Kennedy believes is a reason why she has sleeping problems, since they have gotten worse since she entered college.

“There is so much pressure on students these days to do well in school, get into a top grad school and find a three figure paying job following graduation,” Kennedy said. “Especially for my major communication disorders, it is very competitive and can be extremely stressful at times. If I have a test the next day or am not confident in my performance on an assignment, it contributes to me not being able to fall asleep because I think about so many things.”

Kennedy is not the only college student with this problem. Busy schedules and not being able to fall asleep are forms of sleep deprivation that 87% of college women say they struggle with in their college experience according to medical news today website.

Alexis Wallach a junior at New Paltz turns to coffee and energy drinks to help make up for her lack of sleep. Wallach says that it takes her two hours to fall asleep every night, and she does not sleep straight through to the morning.

  17. Leeanne Carroll Journalism one final story page 2

“No matter how tired I am I can’t fall asleep and wake up three or four times every night,” Wallach says. “ I drink coffee throughout the day and other energy drinks. If I don’t, I don’t have the energy to go to class or to my internship in the morning after a rough nights sleep.”

Wallach says she considers herself sleep deprived since she turns to other resources for energy.

“I should naturally be able to stay awake throughout the day but I can’t, because it is not easy for me to fall asleep,” said Wallach.

Wallach takes multiple medications for other health problems, which she believes is why she cannot stay asleep throughout the night.

Students use sleeping pills as an aid to help prevent sleep deprivation. Junior Meghan Healy takes sleeping aids, but says that they do not always work.

“I take them when I need to fall asleep early so I can be productive the next day,” says Healy. “I consider seven or eight hours of sleep a night enough sleep to keep me energized throughout the day. Without this sleep I feel deprived and unable to concentrate so when I know I need to, that when I resort to using a sleeping aid.”

Pills according to medical news today website, pills do not make up for loss of sleep. Sleeping aids do not allow for REM sleep occurring, which is essential for proper energy for students. Even with aid, students still face the problem of sleep deprivation.

Eight hours of sleep a night is not enough, said the medical news today. Most students feel lack of energy and sleep deprived but even those who get eight hours of sleep and feel they have enough energy could still be considered sleep deprived.

“My performance in school had definitely suffered from not being ale to sleep,” Wallach said.” It has often worse since I have been in college and I went from receiving all A’s and B’s my freshmen year to now receiving mostly B’s and I have gotten a C.”

Freshmen Scarlett Valentin deals with sleep deprivation, because of how late she stays up at night. Valentin often pulls all nighters or is up late to do homework and study.

“Time management is a issue for me, so I have to stay up late and do work when I save things for last minute,” says Valentine. “I pull all-nighters about once a month and when it’s finals I usually end up staying up 3 nights in the two week period.”

The stress of school has led other students like Valentin to make choices to stay up late and be sleep deprived. On weeknights 20 percent of students stay up all night at least once a month, and 35 percent of students stay up until 3 a.m at least once a week according to ‘Significant Sleep Deprivation and Stress’ article in USA Today.

“When I stay up, I don’t really ever make up for it, because I still have other things to do. I just go back to a normal nights sleep for me which is about six hours, but I never make up for what I missed,” says Valentin.

Brian A. Richter, Ph.D., specializes in Sleep Medicine, a subspecialty of medicine that deals with sleeping disorders and disturbances.

Richter says that students should take power naps 20-30 minutes long during their breaks and in between writing papers and studying. If naps are too long, it will affect the students regular sleeping pattern so short naps help to gain back their energy and increase their ability to ay attention.

Sleep deprivation can also cause weight gain in some students, because of the effect on their hormones, said Richter. Staying up late prevents the process of burning sugar and starch and turning it into energy.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Leeanne Carroll Journalism one final story page 3

Richter suggests exercise and a good diet in order to maintain a healthy balance that will help sleeping patterns. Caffeinated beverages and exercise late at night will have the opposite effect and keep students up at night.

Students can often get low marks in classes because of sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep causes a decrease in attention span and concentration which effects learning. Low productivity levels in students are a result of their sluggish feelings, which cause tem to perform badly according to Richter.
